Asics Onitsuka Tiger Fencing LA Mens/Womens Unisex Trainers

Published: Monday 05 July, 2010

The Onitsuka Tiger Fencing LA by Asics was introduced during the LA Olympic Games in 1984 and was worn by the Japanese Fencing team. The design of this shoe is based on a fencing shoe originally made for Mr Azuma, who was a member of the Japanese Fencing Team. When designing the shoe, Onitsuka Tiger closely studied the various movements that the athletes made during a fencing bout and saw that as the right and left feet move in different ways it was necessary to make elements of the shoe asymmetric.

It features a mesh/leather upper for comfort and breathabilty. The herringbone pattern on the outsole was designed in a way that accomodates the movements associated with the sport of fencing. The direction of the pattern differs between the right and left feet, therefore giving the athlete enough traction whilst fencing. The sole has been constructed with a "wrap-up" outsole in the heel portion in order to ensure a smooth backward and forward motion, which is key during competitive fencing bouts. It also features a thick heel wedge for cushioning and propulsion.
